Electronics that are obsolete, broken and destined for recycling or disposal are sometimes called electronic waste. There are many chemicals and elements in electronics waste. A circuit board contains gold, copper, platinum, silver and lead. If this is recycled properly this waste is a valuable source of secondary raw materials.
On January 1, 2012 the Illinois Electronic Products Recycling and Reuse Act landfill ban for certain electronic devices became effective. Electronic items such as televisions, monitors, computers and printers are some of the most common items no longer allowed in the regular trash.
